Today Smart Growth America released their annual Dangerous by Design report, noting that “the number of people struck and killed while walking reached yet another new high in 2020” and the numbers for 2021 are looking worse.
This is because while driving decreased in 2020, drivers continued to use our streets and roads exactly as they were designed… Dangerously.
The result of which, here in Texas means that El Paso and the San Antonio-San Marcus region were the 18th and 20th most deadly cities for pedestrians across the nation.

- #18 El Paso (with an average of 2.95 pedestrian deaths /100k people per year)
- #20 San Antonio – New Braunfels (2.82)
- #36 Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land, TX (2.23)
- #37 Austin-Round Rock-Georgetown, TX (2.2)
- #44 Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington, TX (2.04)
- #59 McAllen-Edinburg-Mission, TX (1.56)
